submitted a note to CHI 2012

Last Friday, I submitted a note (4 page paper) to CHI 2012! This is one of the top tier conferences for the HCI community. I’d say more about the note (topic, scope, etc.), but the review process is anonymous. I’ll post an update to this when reviewing has finished.

Notes are quite difficult to get accepted, so my hopes aren’t all that high, but the process of writing it was quite rewarding nonetheless. I’m eager to hear the feedback from my reviewers.

Thanks to Karrie and Josh for all your help getting this paper together.

Mendeley Advisor

Mendeley, if you’ve not come across it yet, is an amazingly robust and feature-rich citation management platform, and is my citation manager of choice. Their community outreach folks have recently recruited me (and presumably quite a few others) to join the Mendeley Advisors. This means you may soon see me leading small workshops on Mendeley! I’m excited.

Special thanks to Kristen for kicking my butt lately to get my citations in line, and to Kora for introducing me to the tool in the first place.

Vocsyl iOS Development

After working with Josh on his autism project (details coming soon), I’ve joined the development team behind the Vocsyl project, which includes Josh and a number of gifted undergraduates. We’re working on porting the code to the iOS platform at the moment, among other things. I can’t say a lot just yet, but stay tuned.

HCI sub-reddit

I’m apparently now a moderator on the Computer-Human Interaction sub-reddit. Go there for a newsfeed of neat community news, or post some yourself. Thanks, John Balamuta!

ACES

In Summer 2010, I ran the human study component of the ACES project. ACES itself is a software package, and is part of a continuing study in the use of language emulation software to promote empathy for individuals with aphasia. We (Josh, Marina, myself, and quite a few others) are in the process of expanding the study to look at the evolution of language in the face of a lowered quality of communication.

A paper on this study is part of the proceedings of CHI 2010 at ACM’s Digital Library.

Josh has a more complete page over at his site.
